My books now fall into two distinct categories – The American West and Military Fiction. I enjoy writing about both.
The Cheyenne Trilogy series.
Though set in the American West, my books are not ‘westerns’ – there is no square-jawed hero with a blazing six gun who rescues damsels in distress. These novels deal with human beings, their strengths and flaws – in this case, a small, independent band of Suhtai Cheyenne who roamed the Great Plains of America in the mid-19th century. These are stories of how they reacted to traditional enemies as well as the slowly encroaching presence of soldiers and settlers.
Many of the types of incidents portrayed here are true and documented in various national and state archives in the USA. Some may find the human detail upsetting but I always try to reflect reality. Real historical figures intrude into the story because they lived and moved in the American West at the same time as my storylines.
Set against a true historical background and timeline, my books cover the period of the Plains Indian Wars to the closing of the American frontier. But the story won’t end there. Life is never a straight and easy trail as all my characters discover.
Still in production is the follow-on series of Cheyenne stories, The Cheyenne Epilogues – look out for those too!
The Operation SEISMIC series
In 2024 I was commissioned by Dusty Saddle Publishing (DSP) to explore a new genre of novel with them; this was Military Fiction.
My Operation SEISMIC novels are set in the late 1970’s and early 80’s with the main character George Maitland – a former soldier – being drawn into the murky worlds of traitors, terrorism and summary justice. He is the very opposite of a smooth ‘Bond’ style hero. He exists in that far off world – before computers, smartphones and connectivity – and must rely on his wits to survive and get things done. His tasking stems from a shadowy group known only as ‘the panel’ who operate under the radar of the government and establishment. Maitland is a one-off asset – anonymous, patriotic but dangerous. If you like your undercover heroes to be drinking cocktails on beaches in the company of glamorous women – Maitland isn’t for you.
In addition to the written word, I give talks on related topics that can be adapted for time, content or cost depending on where you are and what you’d like to hear – check out the ‘Talks’ section and just let me know.
